Cat Adoption Whidbey Island
Whidbey Animals' Improvement Foundation, better known as WAIF, is Whidbey Island's dedicated animal welfare nonprofit, and it is the source of every cat on this page. WAIF keeps cats at three adoption locations spread along the length of the island: the main shelter in Coupeville, a cat adoption center in Oak Harbor, and the Freeland Cat Cottage. The island is easy to reach by road over the Deception Pass Bridge or by the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry.

Where can I meet adoptable WAIF cats? +
WAIF has three adoption locations: the Coupeville shelter at 60 Rhododendron Park Road, the Oak Harbor Cat Adoption Center at 465 NE Midway Blvd, and the Freeland Cat Cottage at 1806 Newman Road. All three welcome adopters Wednesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Can I adopt a cat the same day I visit? +
WAIF uses an in-person, queue-based first-come, first-served, first-approved system, so no appointment is needed during adoption hours. Adopters must be at least 18 and must live in Washington state, since WAIF asks that animals be returned to the shelter if an adoption does not work out.
Do I need to license my cat on Whidbey Island? +
Pet owners on Whidbey and Camano Islands can license their pets online through WAIF's DocuPet portal, and licenses there expire a year from the date of purchase rather than at the end of the calendar year. The service does not cover pets living within the city limits of Langley or Coupeville.
