Methodology

What is measured. "Days to adopt" is the time between when a cat first appeared on a tracked shelter listing and when it disappeared. A cat that leaves a listing is treated as adopted; this is a proxy — the cat could have been adopted, transferred, or otherwise removed.

Who counts as a tabby. A cat counts as tabby when its listing mentions "tabby" in either the coat color or the breed field (for example "Brown Tabby", "Gray Tiger Tabby", or "Tabby / Domestic Shorthair"). Cats with no usable color or breed data are excluded from the comparison rather than guessed at.

Data window. 2026-03-27 through 2026-10-08 Figures are recomputed on every page load from current database state.

Excluded records. RescueGroups adoptions are excluded: its removed history comes entirely from an April-August 2026 feed outage, so those records' removal dates are not real adoptions. Averages are only published once a group has at least 10 tracked cats; below that we show "insufficient data" rather than a misleading number.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tabby cat? +
A tabby is a coat pattern, not a breed. The classic tabby look is dark stripes, spots, or swirls on a lighter background with a distinctive "M" marking on the forehead. Tabbies come in four pattern types — classic (swirled), mackerel (striped), spotted, and ticked — and the pattern appears in everything from mixed-breed Domestic Shorthairs to purebred Maine Coons and Bengals.
What is the personality of a tabby cat? +
While each cat is an individual, tabbies are often described as friendly, outgoing, playful, and social — they are consistently among the most affectionate cats in shelter foster reports. Because tabby is the most common coat pattern, most of the friendly mixed-breed cats in Seattle-area shelters are tabbies, so you get a huge personality range to choose from.
Where can I find tabby cats near me? +
Seattle-area shelters list new tabbies every day. The feed on this page shows the newest tabby cats currently available at the shelters and rescues we track, one per shelter, updated hourly. Every card links to the shelter's own listing where you can apply. If none fit today, check back — tabbies are the most common pattern in local shelters, so new ones appear constantly.
Do tabby cats take longer to get adopted in Seattle? +
Based on 8,516 cats that left tracked Seattle-area shelters between 2026-03-27 and 2026-10-08, tabbies took an average of 5.8 days to be adopted versus 5.7 days for non-tabby cats. These figures are recomputed hourly and treat any color or breed mention of "tabby" as a tabby.
Do long-haired tabby cats need extra grooming? +
Yes. Long-haired tabbies have an undercoat that mats easily, so they need brushing two or three times a week (daily during spring and fall shedding season) and occasional trims around the hindquarters. Short-haired tabbies are lower maintenance — a weekly brush is usually enough to control shedding.
